Daphne Baptist Cemetery, 1890

Old County Road south of Villa Drive

Annie and Larkin Ellis Edmondson donated this tract of land to the church in 1890. Mr. Edmondson had feet as large as his heart was generous. Those feet made him an easy target for jokesters, such as Captain Frank Lumsdun. One morning Mr. Edmondson asked Captain Lumsdun, a bay boat captain, to purchase a pair of shoes for him in Mobile. At that time, bay boat captains frequently made small purchases in Mobile for the local residents. When the boat returned to Daphne that afternoon, Captain called out to Mr. Edmondson, who was standing on the wharf, “Larkin, I could only get one of your shoes on the boat at a time. I’ll bring the other one

tomorrow!”
