In 1904 James Roy and Conchita Hammett purchased this tract of land. Mr. Hammett was from a railroad family.   He operated several sawmills and was president of the Bank of Daphne.  19  In 1949 the Hammett home was purchased by the Catholic Sisters of Mercy who converted it into a small convalescence home named the Villa Mercy.This facility for the elderly and infirmed has grown to provide a wide range of services, including acute rehabilitation, subacute care, skilled nursing, outpatient services, home health, hospice, long-term care, Alzheimer care, assisted living and independent living.
